Most hospitality groups add a little culture to their restaurants. This one began the other way round — an art gallery and an archive that went on to open cafés, ballrooms and celebration venues, and is now helping bring a Nizam-era palace back to life.

Culture First, Then the Kitchen

Bluebell Hospitality is the hospitality arm of Kalakriti India — a portfolio of restaurants, cafés, celebration venues and cultural experiences across Hyderabad.

The order in which it grew explains what it is. Kalakriti was a gallery before it was anything else, and then an archive. The hospitality came out of that: a café inside the art complex, a South Indian kitchen beside a palace in the Old City, a patisserie, a ballroom. Each was opened by people whose day job was already art and heritage.

Which is why the art in these rooms is not decoration. It was there before the tables were.

The destinations are deliberately unalike — a multi-format club in Gachibowli, an artisan patisserie, a gallery café in Banjara Hills, a pure-vegetarian South Indian café beside the Charminar precinct. What holds them together is a set of convictions rather than a house style: that food should be carefully made, that a room should be worth remembering, that service should be warm, and that culture belongs in the experience rather than on the walls around it.

A pure-vegetarian café inside the Kalakriti Art Complex, where original works, hand-painted furniture and sculpture are part of the meal rather than the backdrop. Also a platform for artists and cultural programmes.

Sardar Mahal

A palace built in 1900, a few minutes from the Charminar, is being brought back through a public-private partnership. Kalakriti Ventures serves as cultural partner, carrying the group’s experience in art, archives and hospitality into the palace’s programming and operation.

The plan is for an art gallery, a cultural centre and studio, a heritage café, heritage accommodation, public programmes and curated walks through the Old City. None of it is open yet.

This family has spent a hundred and sixty-five years putting up institutions. This is the first time it has been asked to bring one back.

There is a logic to how it arrived here. Kaapi & Karam already stands beside the palace — a working kitchen in the Old City, opened before the restoration, with a room upstairs for heritage groups. The café was the foothold. The palace is what it was next to all along.

And the arrangement is an old family habit in modern dress. A public-private partnership is the same instinct that gave a law college to a society and a polytechnic to the state: put resources behind something, take a share of the responsibility, and leave the thing itself belonging to the public.
